For more information, please contact Work-based learning opportunities available (i.e. Students are required to join a local fire department prior to enrollment and obtain their CPR certification. Due to the in-depth nature of the material being covered, the curriculum for the Fire Academy pathway requires individuals be available outside of school hours, including evenings and weekends. Some topics covered are Right-to-Know, safety, medical care, knot tying, ICS-100, fire behavior, chemistry of fire, SCBA’s, extinguishers, forcible entry, ladders, rescue procedures, ventilation, water supply, hose and nozzle handling, salvage and overhaul, sprinklers, communications, blood borne pathogens, wildland fires, utility emergencies, thermal imaging camera, rope rescue and hazmat awareness and operations. With a combination of classroom and hands-on participation, the new firefighter candidate will master the basic tasks of firematics. Students will enroll in the New Jersey Firefighter 1 course and be eligible to earn the Firefighter 1 certification. Students take the Fire Academy in the fall and the Emergency Medical Technician (EMT) Academy in the spring. These academies will provide students the opportunity to take advantage of Polytech’s partnerships with the Hunterdon County Fire Chief’s Association, the Hunterdon County Emergency Services Training Center, and Clinton First Aid & Rescue Squad (CFARS). The Hunterdon County Fire Academy and EMT Academy are two pathways that complement each other and provide students with training in multiple emergency response fields.
